Gibco – RPMI 1640 Medium (Without L-Glutamine), 500 mL

Gibco – RPMI 1640 Medium (Without L-Glutamine), 500 mL

Gibco™ RPMI 1640 Medium supports a broad range of mammalian cells, with glutamine and phenol red, but without HEPES. Sterile-filtered, cGMP-compliant, 500 mL.

Gibco™ RPMI 1640 Medium (Roswell Park Memorial Institute 1640) was originally developed for culturing human leukemic cells in suspension or as monolayers. Today, it is widely used for a variety of mammalian cells including HeLa, Jurkat, MCF-7, PC12, PBMC, astrocytes, and carcinomas.

This formulation is modified to include L-glutamine and phenol red, but without HEPES. RPMI 1640 is distinct from other media because it contains glutathione, high levels of vitamins, and unique supplements such as biotin, vitamin B12, and PABA, along with elevated concentrations of inositol and choline.

Since RPMI 1640 does not contain proteins, lipids, or growth factors, supplementation with 10% Fetal Bovine Serum (FBS) is typically required. The medium uses a sodium bicarbonate buffer system (2.0 g/L) and requires a 5–10% CO₂ environment to maintain physiological pH.
